Learn more about the mosaic process
The mosaics I create are made to hang on walls of homes or offices. I can make mosaics on any surface such as coffee or bedside tables and counter tops.
The colour of artistic glass will never fade making this a long-lasting art piece. Unlike other mediums these mosaics can be hung in direct sunlight. Perhaps a bright entrance or a sunroom.
The artistic glass I use is the same as what stained glass artists use when making tiffany lamps or church windows. But I use this glass in a totally different way. Instead of soldering each piece together and creating objects that let the light shine through, I glue them to a solid piece of wood and then use colored grout (usually black) to hold and seal the glass in place and unify the whole piece. The light does not shine through it as it does tiffany lamps but the effect is still spectacular. I also love to incorporate silver and coloured mirrors in the mosaics.
Most of the elements of the mosaic are made by hand. For example the substrate (another word for wood panel), is prepared in my wood shop. It is cut to size, sanded, primed and painted.

Key-hole slot
The hanging mechanism is also custom made for each mosaic. I either use a key-hole slot for lighter pieces or a wooden frame and metal wire for heavier mosaics. The wooden frame creates spacing between the wall and the mosaic giving it a nice “floating” effect.
Yes, I do cut myself sometimes while handling this particular medium. But rest assured cuts are meant only for me. To ensure that the final product is safe to handle, each piece of glass is carefully sanded before it is glued and grouted.
